Most travelers book the lowest fare, then get hit with a carry-on fee, a checked-bag fee, and an overweight surcharge at the gate. This calculator compares the real total cost of three baggage strategies — personal item only, carry-on, and checked — across your trip length, airline tier, and packing risk.

When each strategy actually wins
These rules apply to most economy fares. Premium and elite-status flyers should re-run with a Legacy + 0% overweight setup.
Personal item only
Wins on trips ≤ 3 days when laundry isn't needed and you'd rather skip overhead-bin roulette.
Carry-on, ultra LCC
Loses fast — Spirit/Ryanair charge $40–70 each way. Personal item often beats carry-on here.
Carry-on, legacy
Free on most legacy economy fares. The default winner for 4–10 day trips.
Checked, 14+ days
Becomes cheaper than carry-on + hotel laundry combo, and saves your back through the airport.
Checked, ≥3 segments
Each connection multiplies the fee — only pick if your time value at carousel < $25/hr.
High overweight risk
Switch to two carry-ons or a lighter suitcase before the trip. Gate fees of $100 wipe out any savings.
Family of 4
One shared checked bag + 4 personal items usually beats 4 carry-ons on LCC fares.
Digital nomad, ≥21 days
Checked + laundromat strategy wins. Carry-on logistics cost more in laundry fees than baggage fees saved.
How the math works
Assumptions stated up front
Fees are 2026 published rates for each airline tier, averaged across the three biggest carriers in each tier. Ultra LCCs charge per segment; legacy carriers charge per direction.
Overweight is modeled as fee × probability × segments. Most carriers charge $100 for 23–32 kg checked, $50 for a heavy carry-on if forced under the seat.
Laundry trigger kicks in past day 7 for carry-on and day 12 for checked. Below those thresholds, laundry cost is $0.
Time cost covers waiting at the carousel only — security and check-in lines roughly cancel out across strategies.
All figures are estimates for planning. Always confirm the fee with your specific airline's fare class before booking.
